BRAND The name ‘Pedal Watt’ is a based on the concept of
physically pedaling and promoting a healthy alternative of travel around the community and ‘Watt’ referring to the electricity generated by the your efforts to travel smartly/cheaply and more healthily.
Our dominant philosophy is to serve and protect our environment for future communities.
BRAND – THE ELEMENTS Logo
Essence - The ‘Pedal Watt’ logo was designed to capture unity, energy and positivity.
Colour - This is refected in warm orange which is uplifting and blue for the environment. Both colours are complementary within the colour spectrum, unifying the concept even more.
Strapline – Refects our ideals of not only cycling for our health and the environment, but to re-cycle in all other aspects of daily life whether it may be recycling paper, glass, plastics as well as reinventing new ways to reduce your consumption. etc.
Typography – A typeface that is friendly, optimistic and structured referring to our ideals on procedure and transparency.
The bike design is user friendly and also gives room for advertisements to be placed onto the bikes. The electronics that are on the bike are covered up to prevent them from being damaged .
Magnets create energy when the wheel rotates
The ‘PedalPods’ are a simple shape that allow the bikes to slot in and out easily. Each is fitted with a locking system that releases the bike when the consumer pays using the card and
money slot system.

Group Meetings- The Design Part 2

The initial concept our group came up with was to develop a bike hiring system that could be based in Dundee. This would suit post consumers as a bike could a means in commuting to work and by basing our company in Dundee we can begin to target University students and help them become more aware of environmental issues and also contribute in supporting sustainable transport in Dundee.
Bike hiring systems have been put in place in cities such as London and Amsterdam
However we plan to incorporate this business plan with a way of aiding post consumers and also a way of producing power for the city and creating a more sustainable Dundee.

The concept of our bike hiring company was to have various docking stations based around central Dundee. The bikes would have have space for power storage, when the customer pedals, power can be generated and stored in the power dock on the bike, this can then be converted and used by the council.

After much debate we came up with a company logo, "Pedal Watt" -Pedal, obviously because our company is a bike hire, and "watt" because by pedalling you can generate power.

Group Meetings- The Design

In semester two of this year we have been meeting with our groups and have been given asked to make a business proposal and create a design which will accommodate the needs of post consumers.
In order to establish a successful design it was important for us to understand what a post consumer is and the life style they lead.

Beginning of Dissertation Part Deux

Summary

-Epistemology and social infrastructure: the relativity of social change in design.

I hope to investigate the extent of social conditioning and discuss the notion of whether a design can be looked at objectively and appreciated for its aesthetic value or whether our perceptions of design will always be manipulated and moulded by the environment which surrounds us and the social structure we are a part of.

Within my dissertation I hope to achieve a better understanding of the processes of design and the relationships between the designer and the consumer.
Various issues have to be understood in order to create a design that is accessible and understood by the client, it is imperative that the designer has an intrinsic understanding of the consumers needs and the background they have come from.
I feel my research can be divided into three main areas; I will consider the social, economical and political influences within societies which effectively alter and manipulate our perception of what makes a good design.
If we consider the social structures that vary throughout the world it becomes apparent that this is due to conditioning and the environment in which we are surrounded by.
These social structures are shaped by agriculture, religion, politics and economics amongst other issues, which suggests that the 3 categories for my dissertation are closely interlinked.
Society in relation to design provokes various issues in which a designer must take into consideration regarding the client, however this also provokes issues regarding the extend to which societies have been conditioned which again I will be investigating in my dissertation.
Have we been indoctrinated by our social structures into feeling certain ways effectively become devoid of the ability to develop an independent opinion?

As a textile designer I must be conscious of these issues whilst developing a brief, however often find myself considering these issues and what they mean to art and design.
Can an image or product ever be viewed and accepted purely as having an aesthetic value or does it have to address issues prevalent within a society to be appreciated?
In order for me to gain a better understanding of this I will be investigating the idea of self and looking at people as individuals who belong to a society.

This exemplifies the idea of being part of a social structure, despite being individuals, we are part of a culture which shapes and moulds us into part of a society.
21st century Britain is a breeding ground for innovitive thinking and modern design, which influences I feel derive from the numerous cultures which inhabit it. 21st century Britain shows the culmination of religious, political and social beliefs that have been rapidly evolving and expanding for decades.
We live in a society which is forever growing and becoming more accepting of people regardless of their background and this, I feel, has massively influenced our perception of design and what it means to a society.
In order to further my knowledge of these issues I will collect information from books and essays which discuss these ideas and will be considering 21st century Britain as a focal point for my studies.

In my dissertation I hope to investigate some of the ideas conveyed in these texts in more depth. I will source material which also addresses the notion of design being objective and relevant to social conditioning.

The other areas I will be discussing in my dissertation is the effect of the economy and politics on contemporary design. I feel that the three issues mentioned are very closely linked and ultimately alter our perception of design.

Politics and economics can be considered a catalyst for social change, and in conjunction with the fluctuation of our economy and changes within our government, we can identify changes in our society and ultimately our perceptions of what makes a successful design begin to alter.
Again, to gain more information for my dissertation I am studying books such as "Developments in Design Methodology" (Nigel Cross) which consider the theory of design and the process involved to create a design which is successful and relivant to the client.

In my dissertation I plan to discuss predominantly western societies and British culture in relation to design. I will gather more sources which discuss the notion of the perception of design and the idea that design (and art) is objective and relative to a persons background.
In order for me to understand my subject to the fullest extent, I feel it is important for me to gather sources from various fields of research such as philosophy, psychology and also sources which discuss the process of design.


Aims


There are various reasons behind me choosing this subject for my dissertation. I feel having this knowledge would benefit me as a designer and it is a topic I find interesting to research. It goes without saying that designers must have an extensive knowledge of their clients needs and backgrounds in order to produce a design that is successful, I therefore feel it is important to understand fully how a person is influenced by their surroundings, and ultimately how this controls what is in fashion and what makes a good design. I feel that being conscious of this information that I have been studying will effect my studio work and help me understand the design process.

Objectives

I plan to produce a body of work which explores my topic in depth and addresses the issues raised in my dissertation summary in detail. In order to achieve this I will research various books, essays and journals which can provide more evidence and discussion for my topic. I will look at various authors and philosophers to gain the best understanding of my subjects from people who might view the topic from different perspectives.
To broaden my research I could also consider doing a survey to establish a greater understanding of what other people from various different backgrounds feel influence them when buying a product.
I hope to achieve an interesting debate on the ideas of perception of design and how society and our environment influences what we buy.

Dissertation Summary

The working title I have have chosen for my dissertation is: "The Role of the Entrepreneurial Designer In 21st Century Britain". Within this there is various areas of research I will have to undergo. I plan to investigate the main areas which influence designers and what makes a consumer buy a product.
I plan to divide my research into 4 main areas of study: Social, political, economical and agricultural. Within these titles I will look at the influence these issues have on our society and how it is imperative for a designer to fully understand these elements in order to create a successful and lucrative design.
In my dissertation I will be discussing the ways in which people perceive design and how this perception can be altered and manipulated depending on their background and personal circumstance.
I have begun to look at various sources in order to achieve a better understanding of my topic. My main resource material has been taken from books and online journals, newspapers and Google Scholar.
